Widening Horizons: The Secret Wine Treasure for the Italian Wine Collector.

The history of the age-worthy Aglianico grape dates back to pre-Roman times. While it can be found all over Southern Italy, the small town of Taurasi in the Campania region, produces an Aglianico very different from the rest. The territory contains volcanic soils that seem to date back to the beginning of time. With a history so deep, so rich, it is just that a wine of the same depth rise from its soil.

Why You’ll Love Antico Borgo

Antico Borgo is a small craft winery founded by enologist Raffaele Inglese. A native from the town of Taurasi, he has spent his life's work chiseling native grapes into works of art. From monumental white wines like Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo to the "emperors chalice," Aglianico red wines, Raffale Inglese just might be the unsung king of Taurasi. He crafts these native treasures without regard to international tastes and trends. A true artisan who chose his own path to seek truth in wine. If you seek authenticity and character, your cellar should make space for these secret masterpieces. Total bottle production: 30,000 bottles annual.

Antico Borgo Taurasi Riserva

Enter the masterpiece theater. Pop the cork and pour into a decanter. Wait. After one hour, return to enjoy the show. The preview expresses powerful and dense perfumes of blackcherry, roses, earth, and leather.   The introductory sip is big like a quiet tidal wave no one is expecting. Mature fruits and volcanic minerality sizzle and erupt. The great and secret show is on! The back palate climaxes with lively acidity and even more weight as the tidal wave lands. As the wave crawls back to the sea, the finish is a quick passage through the garden of Eden--rose pedals, mixed berries, old tree trunks, and burnt ash. An essential masterpiece wine for the serious collector. Age-worthy for 20 years plus. 3,000 bottles annual production.

Antico Borgo Campi Taurasini

Campi Taurasini DOC is a virtually unknown appellation, even for eonophiles. The territory is the same as the Taurasi DOCG which means that you get to enjoy the fruits of this noble terroir at value pricing. "Campi Taurasini" means "little Taurasi fields." While the Taurasi Riserva is aged for 3 years in oak barrels, this wine rests for one year in oak before bottling. What's beautiful about this wine is that it can go the long haul just like the Riserva. Age-worthy for a minimum of 10 years and more. Great with thick cuts of meats or heavy wintery soups. A fascinating wine the few know about. Makes a great weekend wine or a special weekday dinner! Handcrafted in Taurasi at 4,000 bottles annually.

Antico Borgo Irpinia Aglianico

Definitely not a wine for California wine drinkers. Irpinia Aglianico is the essence of the Old World. If California wine is like synthetic wood, then this wine is like an antique chair made of 100% true oak. The perfume opens with freshly made leather. As you enter the old world, the little red fruits begin to ooze and secrete their scents. Full bodied, while not being heavy, the wine continues to reveal its layered flavors for hours. An industrial wine could never do such a lively thing like that. Irpinia Aglianico was the everyday wine of the kings. Now it's your turn. Wine and dine with an antique wine and who knows, it might give you the crown. 10,000 bottles produced annually.
