Why You’ll Love Iolei
Nestled in the heart of Sardinia, Oliena is a village steeped in history and tradition. Dominated by the imposing limestone massif of Monte Corrasi, the highest peak in the Supramonte range at 1,463 meters, the area is renowned for its rugged beauty and rich cultural heritage.
The cultivation of vines in Oliena dates back centuries, with a significant boost in the 17th century when Jesuit monks introduced advanced agricultural practices, including the cultivation of the Cannonau grape. By the 1600s, over 80,000 vines had been planted, laying the foundation for the region’s esteemed wine production.
The famed Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio visited Oliena in 1882 and was captivated by its local wine. In a 1909 letter to his friend Hans Barth, D’Annunzio praised the wine, referring to it as “Nepente,” a term from Homer’s Odyssey meaning a drink that erases sorrow. This endorsement further elevated the wine’s prestige.
In this rich tapestry of history and tradition, the Iolei Winery emerges as a family-run vineyard dedicated to producing authentic Cannonau wines. With a minimalist approach to winemaking, they allow the grapes to express their true character, capturing the essence of Oliena’s unique terroir. Each bottle not only offers a taste of Sardinia but also showcases local artistry through its thoughtfully designed labels.
